Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that afflicts the brain as we age.  An estimated five million Americans suffer from this devastating disease.  Symptoms may vary between individuals but the onset of the disease is similar in all victims, forgetfulness and loss of thought in such severity that it makes normal and mundane chores and activities frustrating or unrecognizable.  For loved ones, staying aware of your loved one is important in possibly identifying possibly Alzheimer’s symptoms.  Catching symptoms early increases the preparation and response time doctors have possibly to maximize the amount of quality time you and your loved ones have left together.

The symptoms of Alzheimer’s will progress to the point that patients will find themselves confused and in unfamiliar surroundings even in their own homes.  Initially, the symptoms are simple forgetfulness, but these lacks in brain and memory function deteriorate to the point that other areas of the body are forgotten by the brain.  Eventually, the brain will fail to send signals to organs and other major life processes systems, which will in turn lead to the death of an individual.  This fatal progression can last anywhere from five to twenty years.

At present day there is no cure for Alzheimer’s but with proper treatment, therapy and support structure victims of Alzheimer’s can minimize the affects and improve their quality of life.  Progress has been slow in the treatment of this debilitating disease, but science has come a long way in the last 15 years.  Efforts by scientists and physicians around the world hold considerable promise for the treatment, slowdown of progression, and eventually finding a cure.  One important medical advisor in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease is a psychologist.  Cognitive therapies and exercises greatly helps maintain and strengthen the minds of those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

In the effort to preserve the mind of your loved one, using the help and mental properties of psychological treatment can prove greatly and highly beneficial. In some cases, mental deterioration, with the aid of other treatments, is delayed by years at a time.  Obviously, only professional psychologist is armed with the necessary tools to achieve these desired results.  Why wait any longer to fight the disease that is robbing you of precious years with your elderly loved one?
