Counseling

Counseling, as it applies to the field of psychology, refers to a meeting between clients and a qualified mental health expert, in which a conversation takes place to explore and determine methods to improve or treat the client’s mental health.  Since the circumstances, backgrounds, and needs of each client differ, there are different types of counseling methods and approaches to represent each client’s unique and different circumstances.  A therapist can work with you to determine a plan of treatment that is the most effective for you.  This may involve one single type of method, or it can include a combination of different methods, which is referred to as the eclectic therapy approach.

In almost all cases, the ability to honestly speak about your concerns and truthfully answer the counseling professional’s questions is vital.  For this reason, finding the right counseling professional is extremely important, and many individuals seek the advice and insight of more than one counselor before electing to stay with a specific one indefinitely.  Not all counselors fit the bill for each person, however, staying vigil in finding the right one for you will pay off significantly in the end.

There are traditional therapies and alternative therapies.  It is up to each individual to determine over time which processes are best suited to meet his or her therapeutic needs.  Time and improvement in mental state, or therefore lack of, is always a good determinant of the success of each therapeutic method.  Therefore, initially rejecting one form of therapy versus another is best left in the hands of a qualified and experienced counselor.  The traditional therapies include Behavior Therapy, Biomedical Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Couples and Family Therapy, Electroconvulsive Therapy, Group Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Light therapy, Psychoanalysis, Play Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy.

Alternative approaches to counseling focuses on the interrelationship between mind, body, and spirit.  Alternative Therapies include Self-help, Diet and Nutrition, Pastoral Counseling, Animal Assisted Therapies, Expressive therapies such as art and music, Culturally Based Healing Methods such as Chinese Acupuncture, Relaxation and Stress Reduction Techniques, and Technology Based Applications.  Not all counselors implement all the aforementioned methods.  Seeking the opinion of a variety of counselors is important to find which of these methods is best for you and your personal counseling needs.
