Drug Abuse

A pattern of unreasonable or uncontrolled use of a substance for a non-therapeutic or non-medical effect is drug abuse.  Alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, methadone, methamphetamine, marijuana, and tranquilizers are the most common drugs abused.  Continued abuse of these and similar drugs have devastating consequences on an individual’s life and those with whom the abuser is associated including family, friends, and co-workers.  Once an individual experiences negative consequences in response to their drug use and fails to change their habits, this pattern of substance usage is termed drug abuse.  What was once simply a good time is now an addiction or pattern of habits that will slowly bring individuals to depths of depravity.  There is debate regarding the difference between abuse and dependence, however in either case the consequences can be equally devastating.

With dependence, there is always abuse, and although abuse may occur without dependence in the initial stages, it is nonetheless the process by which abuse and sub-sequential dependence / and or addiction can develop.  Drug abuse affects individuals of any age, race, and background.  The root causes of drug abuse are generally not as easily seen as many individuals think.  Simply just stopping using drugs is no longer an option for most individuals.  Serious psychological help and guidance is necessary for these individuals to face the problems within themselves as well as their problems with drug abuse.

In many cases, these individuals do not have a problem with drugs, but rather, these individuals have problems within their souls and their minds.  A psychologist can help persons struggling with drug abuse face their inner demons and perhaps help them along on their road to recovery from drug abuse.  In any circumstance involving drug abuse, there is the potential for emotional, mental and physical deterioration including death.  Criminal prosecution and incarceration is also a probable.  The incomprehensible demoralization from drug abuse is not a place any individual should reside; however, the fact of the matter is that individuals face this reality on a daily basis.

There is a solution, however, but reaching out to medical professionals for information on getting to this solution is necessary.  If you or someone you know is abusing drugs, help should be sought in order to prevent the devastating consequences associated with drug abuse including, addiction, criminal prosecution, and or death.
