Mental Health Report Along With Learning Disability Services In Southwest Yorkshire

The Healthcare Commission today publishes an independent report on mental health and learning disability services in southwest Yorkshire. The report on South West Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust is the result of an inspection known as a clinical governance review.

The routine review was brought forward due to concerns raised about learning disability services. However, no serious concerns about those services were found in the course of the review. Other service areas, including adult mental health services in Wakefield and north and south Kirklees and older people’s services in Calderdale, were also reviewed.

Clinical governance reviews assess the systems and processes the trust has in place for ensuring the highest possible quality of care. The report highlights both areas of good practice and areas that need to be improved.

Healthcare Commission chief executive Anna Walker said: "South West Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust is committed to ensuring that service users are at the centre of everything it does. It has gathered service users’ views through listening events and runs a number of good projects, including art therapy. Its leadership is committed and staff are hard working. However, the trust needs t finalise an estates strategy with commissioners and partners to improve the environment at some inpatient and community facilities.”
